Just in time for the annual burning of Guy Fawkes effigies, the hotel that stands on his reputed birthplace has changed hands.

The De Bretton Group today announced that it has completed a “multimillion-pound” freehold deal to buy Guy Fawkes Hotel on High Petergate from Kaye’s Hotels.

The renamed Guy Fawkes Inn will feature dark timber floors and York flagstones with sawdust, Jacobean oak-panelled walls, antique furniture, a grandfather clock and a log fire. 

A new loft suite will be added to the 12 rooms, while eight new chefs are being recruited. 

David Hattersley, managing director of De Bretton, said:  “We have got the best location in the city to deliver this, combined with a building that says ‘come on in’.

“My inspiration was Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in London’s Fleet Street – pure class. It’s historic, but approachable and comfortable.”
