The major hotel news of the year saw the British Hospitality Association’s annual Trends and Statistics 2007 report revealing that more than 140 new hotels opened in the UK in the 12 months ending August 2007.These new hotels represent 13,000 rooms, up from 11,000 new rooms in the previous year.
With re-launches, refurbishment and the extension and modernisation of existing properties, the BHA estimates that £3b was invested in the UK hotel industry during the period, more than in any previous year.
The Whitbread Hotel Company retained its position as the UK 's largest hotel chain by bedrooms numbers. Its Premier Inn chain had more than 488 hotels with in excess of 32,600 bedrooms by September 2007.

InterContinental was not far behind, with 32,540 bedrooms across its 241 UK hotels while the third position went to Premier Inn's arch-rival, the budget Travelodge chain, with more than 18,950 bedrooms across 310 venues.
In other hotel news, private equity firm Blackstone splashed out £12.69b on Hilton Hotels Corporation, the budget hotels sector broke through the £1b barrier Whitbread snapped up Golden Tulip for £40m and for the first time.
In March 2007, the Government bowed to pressure from Caterer, the BHA and a number of hotel groups by ruling out bed tax.The Government also announced a crackdown on rogue hotel employers paying staff less that the minimum wage.
Hotel news for 2008 looks set to be mixed as the global credit crunch begins to bite, but experts remain confident that the hotel industry will continue to thrive.
