Hell's Kitchen

Hell's Kitchen UK is an ITV-based reality show. There have been four series of Hell's Kitchen in the UK since 2004 and a further five series, fronted by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, called Hell's Kitchen USA in the States, with a sixth due to start in July 2009.

The programme seeks to teach up to 10 people how to cook.

The most recent UK version of Hell's Kitchen featured Marco Pierre White in 2009, while the series was launched in 2004 by Gordon Ramsay. A second series, fronted by celebrity chefs Jean-Christophe Novelli and Gary Rhodes, was televised in 2005, while Marco took over the reins as head chef for the delayed third series, which was broadcast in September 2007.

The first three series of Hell's Kitchen UK have been presented by Angus Deayton, but he was replaced for the fourth series by Claudia Winkleman after he fell out with Marco. In 2007, after the filming of the third series, Marco Pierre White signed a three-year golden handcuffs deal for £1.5m. Read more about Marco Pierre White on TV on this Caterersearch blog post.

SERIES 1

In the first series, actress and singer Jennifer Ellison won the title after creating a signature dish of burger with chunky chips under the tutelage of Gordon Ramsay. The show ran daily for two weeks and featured celebrities Amanda Barrie, Belinda Carlisle, Dwain Chambers, Edwina Currie, James Dreyfus (runner up), Jennifer Ellison (winner), Matt Goss (third place), Al Murray, Abi Titmuss and Tommy Vance who replaced Roger Cook after he injured himself on the first night.

A follow-up programme was televised afterwards called Hell's Kitchen: School Reunion, in which Ellison and the Hell's Kitchen runner-up, James Dreyfus, joined forces to organise a healthy dinner service for the children at Gordon Ramsay's former school.

SERIES 2
Broadcast in spring 2005, the format of the second series was overhauled with celebrity chefs Jean-Christophe Novelli and Gary Rhodes heading up two kitchens. Ten members of the public were split into two kitchens which competed against each other with the 10 contests being voted off over a two-week period. Newcastle's Terry Miller emerged victorious and won £250,000 to start his own restaurant. He subsequently launched Rockafella in Newcastle.

SERIES 3Marco Pierre White. He took in 10 celebrities - Adele Silva (runner-up), Brian Dowling, Paul Young, Abigail Clancy, Jim Davidson, Rosie Boycott, Barry McGuigan (winner), Anneka Rice and Kelly LeBrock, Lee Ryan (left the show on day three) - through their paces with the help of Nick Munier, former manager of White's Belvedere restaurant, Tim Payne and Matthew Brown.

SERIES 4 The fourth and latest series kicked off on 13 April 2009 with eight celebrity would-be chefs - Adrian Edmondson, Anthea Turner, Bruce Grobbelaar, Danielle Bux, Grant Bovey, Linda Evans, Niomi McLean-Daley (aka Ms. Dynamite), and Jody Latham (the first to be eliminated, on day seven). Nick Munier and sous chefs Tim Payne and Matthew Brown returned to assist Marco who, this time round, gets to sack the celebrities while the public votes for the winner.

Hell's Kitchen UK is filmed at 3 Mills Studios in the East End of London.
