Barracuda reports a rise in wine sales
Catey winning pub operator Barracuda Group has revealed that its wine sales grew by 17% during the last three months of 2007.
Barracuda said that its rose sales rose by 99% in the final quarter with sparkling wine and champagne sales up by 50%.
White wine remains its largest seller with 72,000 bottles sold in the run up to Christmas.
Myles Doran, head of marketing at Barracuda, owner of the Smith and Jones and Varsity brands said: "As a category, wine is growing at a rapid rate of popularity within the Barracuda estate and we expect this to continue in 2008.
"Our wine list has been developed to offer recognisable brands and premium lines alongside our expanding food offer and this growth reflects our positioning of high-quality products at a competitive price."
Doran added that the operator had been operating a wine education programme for staff in order to improve their knowledge and increase sales.
Last month, Barracuda revealed that its 216 sites across the UK saw a 3% rise in sales in December, while the majority of rival operators had struggled to boost sales as beer volumes declined and customers felt the impact of the credit crunch.
