Chain hotels in Paris achieved the highest occupancy, average room rate and revenue per available room (revpar) during January 2008 of the 10 European cities listed in the monthly Europe HotStats survey from TRI Hospitality.

However, although London hotels came second to Paris in all these performance indicators, they proved the most profitable overall with income before fixed charges per available room (IBFCpar) of €82.07 against the French capital’s €69.46.

The UK benefited from the lowest payroll costs as a percentage of turnover, which averaged 28.4% compared with 40.8% in Paris (the second highest in the survey after Vienna’s 50.5%).

Warsaw’s equally low labour costs (at 28.5% of turnover) put the Polish capital in fourth in the profitability league despite a 20.5% fall in IBFCpar.

Only hotels in Prague, Vienna and Budapest showed a significant growth in demand, although from a low base.

However, a 123.2% rise in profitability still left  Budapest at the bottom of the table with an IBFCpar of  €13.30, closely followed by Berlin where profitability dropped by 19.6% to €16.97.
