TRI HotStats: monthly European hotel figures - Industry data

(30 April 2008 17:02)

The Berlinale film festival brought Berlin the biggest boost to average room rate during February 2008 of the 10 European cities listed in the monthly Europe HotStats survey from TRI Hospitality.

The 11-day festival – which attracted 20,000 visitors – helped the German city to increase rates by 14% to €164.44, the third highest after Paris and London.

This allowed Berlin to increase IBFCpar (income before fixed charges per available room) by 31.7% to be the fourth most profitable city in the table, despite a small dip in occupancy.

Hotels in Paris achieved the highest average room rate and revenue per available room (at €204.48 and €152.78 respectively) and the second highest occupancy after London.

But their high payroll costs of 43.3% of turnover (second only to Vienna’s 52.9%) meant the UK capital snatched the top slot for profitability.

London hotels (whose payroll costs of 27.2% are the lowest in the survey) generated one-third more profit per bedroom than their French counterparts, with an IBFCpar of €95.13 compared to Paris’ €62.05.

The biggest increase in profitability was seen in Budapest, where IBFCpar soared by 171.4%, albeit from a low base.

The city’s hotels, which have the lowest occupancy levels and the third-highest payroll costs, increased IBFCpar to €6.84, up from €2.52 in February 2006.

The figures are compiled each month by Tri Hospitality Consulting.
