NewsM&J Seafood to drop endangered bluefin tuna(21 May 2008 13:08)M&J Seafood, the Brakes-owned supplier, has announced that it will no longer be supplying Bluefin tuna to foodservice operators. Last year, the European Commission suspended the fishing of Bluefin in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean but M&J has, from this week, extended this to all varieties of the endangered species. Mike Berthet, group director of fish and seafood at M&J, called on chefs and other suppliers to follow suit. “The industry needs to present a united front as we all have an enormous responsibility to support sustainable practices and reverse current trends,” he said. “Chefs are in essence the gatekeepers of the seafood industry and we as suppliers, are the locksmiths in that we need to empower them with the knowledge and tools they need in turn to educate their customers. “ Article continues below
