Scottish government campaigns against bad takeaway food
Takeaway chips, curries and kebabs will come under fire from this week as the Scottish Government launches a £500,000 campaign urging consumers to choose healthier alternatives in a bid to tackle the obesity crisis in Scotland. The Take Life On campaign - which will run to September on TV, radio, billboard ads and the internet - will try to deter the public from scoffing bad takeaways such as chicken tikka masala, battered fish with chips, doner kebabs and deep-pan pepperoni pizzas. Instead, it will steer them towards better alternatives such as tandoori chicken, fish in breadcrumbs, shish kebab and thin-crust pizza. Scotland is the second-fattest nation in the developed world after the USA, with 25.5% of the population deemed obese in 2003, compared with 32.2% in the USA. Chris Reilly of the Townhead Cafe in Biggar, the Scottish and UK Fish and Chip Shop of the Year 2008, commented: " It's wrong to pin the blame entirely on takeaways; there's plenty of high-fat food available in supermarkets." - 1 June, Read the full article in Scotland on Sunday

Dunkin' Donuts pulls ad after bloggers accuse it of promoting terrorism
Massachusetts-based chain Dunkin' Donuts has fallen foul of bloggers over an ad for its iced lattes that featured Food Channel cook Rachel Ray wearing a black and white paisley scarf. The scarf reminded one blogger of the keffiyeh head-dress worn by Arab males and soon the company was being accused of "jihadi chic" and of "casually promoting the symbol of Palestinian terrorism and the intifada" by thousands of bloggers. With many promoting a boycott of the company, Dunkin' Donuts decided to pull the ad - only to accused by thousands more of cowardice for allowing itself to be "castrated" by the blogosphere. - 31 May, Read the full article in the Independent - >>

Pizza Hut celebrates golden anniversary as times get tougher Pizza Hut, the world's largest pizza chain, celebrated its 50th birthday today (31 May) just as business starts to weaken in the tougher economic climate. The group, which now has more than 11,000 stores around the world and $10b (£5b) in annual sales, was founded by the brothers Dan and Frank Carney in Wichita, Kansas, with $600 borrowed from their mother in order to pay their way through college. Last year the group closed more restaurants in the USA than it opened as leases ended, cheese and flour prices soared, and consumers made fewer visits to restaurants. Pizza Hut has responded by updating its look and menu in the USA, adding plasma TVS, local sports memorabilia, baked pasta and chicken wings to the menu. Pizza Hut has 600 sites in the UK, which are now wholly-owned by KFC and Taco Bell parent Yum! Brands after Whitbread sold its half-share in the UK venture in 2006. - 31 May, Read the full article in The Times >>

InBev raising $50b to buy Budweiser brewer
Belgian brewer InBev, the world's largest brewer and the maker of Stella Artois, is close to securing a $50bn financing package to launch a takeover bid for Anheuser-Busch, the US maker of Budweiser. In-Bev is believed to have held talks with investment banks such as JP Morgan, Santander, BNP Paribas and Merrill Lynch about raising the funds and market sources believe an offer letter could be sent out this week. Some claim the Belgian brewer approached Anheuser-Busch last October about a merger. InBev is also thought to be interested in Grolsh and Peroni maker SABMiller. - 1 June, Read the full article in the Sunday Telegraph >>
