Hotel faces £100,000 payout over visitor's trip on stairs
A hotel visitor who slipped on a worn stair carpet has launched a legal battle for compensation of up to £100,000.
Fiona Davidson, 34, was walking downstairs at the Passage House Hotel in Newton Abbott, Devon, when she tripped and fell, breaking her ankle.
She needed surgery on her left leg, followed by extensive physiotherapy, and more surgery to fuse the joint, according to a writ issued at London's High Court.
Ms Davidson, from Mitcham, Surrey, said that she also developed depression as a result of the accident, and will continue to need special shoes long term.
She also expects that her limp will continue, along with pain and swelling.
Hotel owners RST Leisure admitted liability for the accident, which happened on 28 May 2005, in an e-mail sent on 16 November 2005, the writ says. But the two sides are thought unable to agree how much compensation she should receive.
She accuses the hotel owners of negligence and says they failed to take any reasonable care for her safety and allowed the stairs and carpet to become a danger and a hazard.
