Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall reaches Tesco chicken total

Celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has succeeded in raising more than £86,000 to put his concerns about chicken welfare to Tesco shareholders.

The River Cottage presenter wants Tesco to adopt a policy forcing suppliers to improve conditions for birds and is tabling the proposal to the supermarket's annual general meeting.

However, Tesco had claimed that Fearnley-Whittingstall submitted the documents too late - and insisted that it was only fair that he should bear the £86,888 cost of sending the papers to its 269,000 investors.

Fearnley-Whittingstall's predicament moved Caterer Adopted Business the Peach Pub Company to conduct fundraising on his behalf earlier this week.

But a note posted on the campaigner's Chicken Out TV website says that the total has now been reached and any surplus funds will be donated to charity Compassion in World Farming.
