Norwegian Geir Skeie named best chef in Europe

Norwegian chef Geir Skeie has been crowned the best chef in Europe in the inaugural Bocuse d'Or Europe competition, which took place in Norway last week.

Skeie, who works at Midtåsen restaurant in Sandefjord, beat 20 contestants to the title from countries including France, Switzerland and Belgium and took home prize money of €12,000 (£9,500).

Jasper Agerbæk Kure of Denmark came in second place, with Jonas Lundgren of Sweden ranking third.The UK was represented by Simon Hulstone, chef proprietor of the Michelin-starred Elephant in Torquay, Devon.

During a five-and-a-half hour cook-off, the 20 contestants were asked to prepare two dishes using Norwegian salmon and lamb.

Skeie's dishes comprised salmon baked in avocado and nori, while his lamb dish included the saddle and leg and a lamb roll with apricot and lamb sausage.

Borcuse d'Or Europe is a biannual event that has been designed as a selection event to the global Bocuse d'Or competition, which takes place in Lyon, France.

It includes previously excluded countries such as Malta, Croatia and Hungary and has been designed to broaden the horizon of the Bocuse d'Or community.
