New wave of caterers sign up to FSA's healthy workplace meals initiative

A second wave of caterers have been signed up to the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) healthy workplace food initiative, launched early this year to tackle the UK's bulging waistlines.

Accent Catering, Artizian, Autograph (part of Rentokil Initial), Charlton House, ISS Eaton and ISS Mediclean, have committed to reducing salt, saturated fat and sugar from the 160,000 workplace meals they serve collectively each day.

The commitments, which were facilitated by the British Hospitality Association, also include action on procurement, menu planning, kitchen practice and customer information.

Commitments include: switching to rapeseed oil, which is lower in saturated fat; serving undressed salads; grilling or steaming foods instead of frying; offering wholegrain breads and pastas; meal deals that promote a healthy balance and using logos and consumer information to inform customers about their choices.

It means the activity being undertaken by these combined companies will have an impact on around two million meals served in workplaces every day.

In January the "big five" contract caterers - Compass, Sodexo, Aramark, Elior and BaxterStorey - and suppliers Brakes and 3663, signed up to the initiative to provide healthier workplace meals
