Pennyhill Park's Latymer wins Good Food Guide restaurant award

Michael Wignall's restaurant The Latymer at Pennyhill Park in Bagshot, Surrey, has been named as the best new restaurant by the Good Food Guide.

Best known for his five-year stint as executive chef at the Devonshire Arms hotel in Yorkshire, where he held a Michelin star for four years, Wignall joined Pennyhill Park at the end of last year. He stepped into the shoes of former executive chef Andrew Turner, who left to set up the Landau restaurant at London's Langham hotel.

Wignall told Caterersearch he was delighted to have won the award. "Being awarded best new restaurant by the Good Food Guide is a fantastic accolade and really pays homage to all our hard work," he said.

The Good Food Guide named Simon Rogan as the best chef of the year for his work at his restaurants, the Michelin-starred L'Enclume and the more casual Rogan & Co, in the village of Cartmel in the Lake District.

Marcus Eaves, head chef at L'Autre Pied in London, won the best up and coming chef of the year award, while Great British Menu winner Stephen Terry's restaurant The Harwick in Abergavenny, Wales, was named best for use of local produce.

The Good Food Guide editor, Elizabeth Carter, said: "You don't have to be a posh restaurant to get into The Good Food Guide. These chefs and restaurateurs are making a difference to the UK scene, often away from the London limelight."

Earlier this week, The Good Food Guide announced that Heston Blumenthal's three-Michelin-starred Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, scored a rare ten out of ten in this year's guide.

The Good Food Guide 2009 is published on 4 September priced £16.99.
