The Restaurant Association (RA) is today launching a new fundraising programme entitled Meal Appeal.

The scheme, which is a joint-venture with the British Hospitality Association, will help raise money for the Variety Club children’s charity and industry charity Hospitality Action (HA).

As part of Meal Appeal participating restaurants are asked to encourage diners to add £1 or more to their bill at the end of their meal. The money raised will be equally divided between the Variety Club and HA.

The fundraiser is being launched at an event at London restaurant L’Oranger, hosted by British comedian Jonathan Ross.

Bob Walton, chairman of the RA, told Caterersearch Meal Appeal is all about giving something back to the community.

“The hospitality industry is one of the biggest employers in this country yet we never seem to openly give anything back,” he said. “You never see us hand over a big cheque and it’s time we all join forces as an industry and give something back to the community.”

Walton added that with just 10 restaurants participating, the scheme could raise as much as £70,000.
