Hotels set to reopen in Mumbai following terrorist attacks

The management company of the two luxury hotels that were victims of the terrorist attack in Mumbai has announced the reopening of a number of rooms.

The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower and the Oberoi Trident Nariman Point in Mumbai, which sit side by side and are managed by the Oberoi Group, will both reopen sections of their rooms to guests on Sunday, 21 December.

The 235 rooms in the new wing of the Taj hotel - called the Taj Mahal Tower - will reopen at 19:00 on Sunday. The hotel has 565 rooms in total.

The closure of the hotels followed the terrorist attacks which caused damage to the hotels on Wednesday 26th of November.

The hotels were amongst more than 10 locations in the city that were targeted in the terrorist attack, which continued until November 29th and left 170 people dead.

Both hotels' websites report a "round-the-clock effort" by management and staff to ensure they are ready to receive guests.

Enhanced security is promised when the hotels reopen to ensure the safety and comfort of guests and staff.

Acknowledging the efforts devoted to the Oberoi Trident's swift re-opening, Raymond Bickson, managing director and chief executive of The Indian Hotels Company, which owns the hotel, said:

"We dedicate our reopening to the city of Mumbai as affirmation of the values of courage, resilience and dignity.

"To reopen the Taj with such speed but with no loss of attention to detail, shows our resolve to commemorate all the innocent and brave people who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks. In their honour, the Taj will shine again in all its brilliance."

The Taj Group has set up a public service welfare Trust fund named "Taj Public Service Welfare Trust" in order to provide immediate relief to all victims of the recent attack.
