Hospitality figures in New Year Honours list

The hospitality and tourism industries were well represented in the New Year Honours list, unveiled this week.

Jonathan Adnams, executive chairman of brewer and pub operator Adnams, was made an OBE for services to corporate social responsibility.

The group has been recognised for its CSR policies in the past, winning the CSR category at the 2007 National Business Awards.

Nigel Platts-Martin, who won the 2004 Catey for Independent Restaurateur and is co-owner of five award-winning restaurants, including the Square and Chez Bruce, was made MBE for services to the hospitality industry.

Kumar Muthalagappan, managing director of Pearl Hotels and Restaurants Group, was made an OBE for services to the hospitality industry.

Muthalagappan, who sits on the VisitBritain board, is a member of the council of the University of Warwick, deputy chairman of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and has been an Olympic Delivery Authority board member since February 2006.

Hugh Taylor was made an OBE for services to the hospitality industry. He was appointed chairman of VisitEngland (formerly the England Marketing Advisory Board) in April 2003 and sits on the VisitBritain Board in an ex-officio capacity.

Michael Hardman, one of the four founders of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), was appointed as an MBE for services to the brewing industry. Hardman popularised the term "real ale" and has been at the forefront of the campaign to save traditional British beer and to promote the breweries that produce it.

Enam Ali, long-standing chairman of the Guild of Bangladeshi Restaurateurs, was awarded MBE status for services to the Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant industry.

Dutch-born Franca Knowles, HR director at pub and hostel operator Interpub, received an honorary award for services to skills training in the hospitality industry and to charity.

Christopher Rodrigues, chairman of VisitBritain, said: "I'm delighted that colleagues have been honoured in the list, alongside a number of people who make great contributions in support of the tourism industry and its appeals.

"These achievements recognise the importance of a sector that supports millions of jobs and brings more than £86b to businesses throughout the UK."
