London contract caterer Vacherin and Norfolk’s Strattons hotel have been recognised in the annual City of London Sustainable City Awards.

Now in their eighth year, the awards go to organisations that demonstrate outstanding achievement in sustainable business practice.

Former Caterer Adopted business Vacherin won the newly introduced category of Sustainable Food, which is run in association with food pressure group Sustain.

Vacherin was commended by the competition’s judges for the way it had “put the principles of sustainability at the heart of their operations”, with the caterer receiving praise for its focus on sourcing, procurement, food preparation, actions of our staff, use of resources and management of waste.

Phil Roker, director of Vacherin, said: “The judges particularly noted our Sustainability Action Plan and the integrated approach we take from supply chain through staff actions and client building arrangements in selecting us as their winner.

“Sustainability is not just a buzzword for Vacherin it’s a key objective for us and our staff.”

Cyrus Todiwala’s Café Spice Namaste was highly commended in the category with Compass’s Restaurant Associates, the Royal Brompton Hospital, and Wahaca restaurant all short-listed.

Strattons, the 2008 Cateys Green Award winner, picked up the Resource Conservation plaudit and was applauded for its excellent local purchasing record, huge reduction in waste production, increased recycling rates and significant savings in energy and water consumption.
