Compass Group puts in solid performance

Compass UK is performing well in a difficult environment, the caterer said today in a trading statement.

Compass, which announced a major new deal with Coventry Ricoh Arena this morning, said like-for-like volumes in business and industry (B&I) and the leisure sectors were down on last year due to extended Christmas/New Year closures at client sites and the poor weather in February.

However like-for-like revenues in healthcare, education, defence and offshore sectors have remained strong.

Although Compass said some B&I sites had been closed as the recession takes hold, it pointed to major wins with National Grid and the Jockey Club during the period.

Although the company expects UK turnover for the half year to be 4% lower than 2008, extensive restructuring of the business in the past two years means the company expects to deliver improved operating profit, despite the difficult economic conditions.
