Significant new player in Scotland's contract catering market launched

Cordia, the new limited liability partnership created by Glasgow City Council out of its Direct and Care Services (DACS), has been officially launched today (1 April).

The new entity, which will operate at arms-length from Glasgow council with far more commercial freedom than previously, presents a major new force in the contract catering sector in Scotland.

The organisation, which has some 9,000 employees, provides school meals to 300 schools, as well as catering at Glasgow's museums and leisure centres, and providing cleaning and janitorial services across the city.

Cordia, headed by managing director Fergus Chambers, has ambitions to grow its business beyond Glasgow.

Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "The business potential of the new company is exciting. All of DACS' contracts with Glasgow City Council will transfer to Cordia.

"However, in addition, we now have the opportunity to develop, with opportunity for growth in service delivery outside Glasgow."
