Restaurant takes foie gras off menu after attack

A fine dining restaurant in Cheshire, which offers foie gras on its menu, has had its windows smashed by a group believed to be animal rights activists.

The attackers daubed the words foie gras on the walls of the 39 Steps restaurant, in Wilmslow, in an attack in the early hours of the morning.

Fearing further attacks the restaurant, run jointly by John Rebecchi and Duncan Poyser, has now taken foie gras off the menu.

A spokesman for the restaurant said: "Nothing was done or said by anyone prior to this attack and we haven't had any attacks before.

"As a result we will be taking it off the menu but it didn't seem to put customers off. Even while we were having the windows repaired people were still coming in and eating."

Commenting on the attack, a Cheshire police spokesman said: "Several lines of inquiry are being pursued by police in relation to this incident."

Last year, two other restaurants in Cheshire - Belle Epoque and the Duke of Portland - were also targeted by anti-foie gras protestors.
