Workplace meals are now officially healthier, claims FSA

Millions of employees across the UK are now enjoying healthier workplace meals thanks to an initiative launched last January, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said today.

The FSA has issued an official update on the scheme that saw Compass, Sodexo, Aramark, Elior and BaxterStorey and suppliers Brakes and 3663 First for Foodservice publish a series of healthy eating commitments.

These included reducing salt, sugar and saturated fat levels in everyday dishes in the workplace, which the FSA said had been met in full.

New commitments for 2009 are now in place and there are now 12 contract caterers signed up to the healthier workplace food initiative, representing some 85% of the total workplace contract catering market.

The most recent addition to the scheme, Harbour & Jones, publishes its first set of commitments today.

Co-founder Patrick Harbour told Caterersearch: "I an always a bit cynical about government-backed schemes such as this one, but we got involved because healthy eating is something we want to promote and already do within our business.

"This scheme provides a measure we can put in place in our business to demonstrate to clients our hard-work in this important area."
