London's Stafford hotel for sale

The Stafford hotel in London's Mayfair, which won the Hotel of the Year - Group Catey last year, is up for sale for an estimated £80m.

The 105-bedroom, five-star hotel, which is owned and operated by Shire Hotels, a subsidiary of brewer and pub operator Daniel Thwaites, is for sale through property agent Savills.

Shire Hotels managing director Anthony Spencer confirmed that it has received "a number of expressions of interest" for the Stafford, although he would not be drawn on the asking price.

"Daniel Thwaites has owned and operated the Stafford hotel in London since 1995," he said. "As a five-red star hotel, in a unique location, we have received a number of approaches from interested parties over the years and have considered each of them.

"Savills has handled these on our behalf in the past and will continue to do so. There have been a number of recent expressions of interest, but no sale has been agreed."

Daniel Thwaites paid Trafalgar House construction group £16m for the Stafford in 1994. In 2005, it bought the building next door for £10.5m and spent £12m adding 26 bedrooms.

Stuart Procter has been general manager at the Stafford since 2005, when he took the reins from legendary hotelier Terry Holmes, who spent 36 years at the property.
