Hospitality operators in newly published Corporate Responsibility Index

Three hospitality companies have made it into Business in the Community's (BITC) newly-published, pan-industry Corporate Responsibility Index 2008.

Launched in 1996 to help companies benchmark their environmental management and performance, the index is run in association with The Financial Times and this year features contract caterers Sodexo, Aramark and Premier Inn owner Whitbread.

Sodexo, which achieved silver status for the third year running, was recognised for a commitment to and measurement of corporate responsibility throughout its business.

Thomas Jelly, corporate citizenship manager at Sodexo, said: "During difficult financial times, it is important to remember that responsibly managed businesses are ultimately more sustainable."

Fellow caterer Aramark achieved bronze status after its first entry into the index.

Val Carter, corporate responsibility director at Aramark, said: "This is an important milestone in our corporate responsibility journey."

Whitbread, owner of Costa, also picked up a bronze award and was the recipient of a BITC ‘Big Tick'.

Big Ticks are given out to businesses that can demonstrate the impact and high quality management of business practices that have a positive impact on both business and society.

Compass Group's Junior Chefs Academy was re-accredited with a Big Tick. The Academy has been operating since 2003 and is now run in 39 colleges across the UK & Ireland. This year Compass has expanded the academy to focus on three different skill levels and linked it to its apprenticeship scheme.

Vicky Williams, HR director for resourcing and development at Compass, said: "Our continual investment in the academy is a clear demonstration of our desire to attract young people into the industry and ignite their passion for food.

"Gaining Big Tick re-accreditation is a significant achievement, as it recognises the impact of the academy on young people and the industry."
