Chinese restaurant fined after ignoring eleven hygiene warnings

A Chinese restaurant in Leicester was warned eleven times over a three-year period to improve its hygiene standards, a court heard.

Shong Qiang Wang, owner of the Great Wall Chinese restaurant in Welford Road, admitted breaches of the hygiene regulations during a hearing before magistrates in Leicester.

The court was told that staff had repeatedly been warned by health officers to improve hygiene standards, but that in the main these recommendations were ignored.

Mandarin-speaking health officers even came to the restaurant to offer advice.

Sarah Khawaja, for the council, told the court: "There was cooked food stored in cardboard boxes, boxes of chicken left to defrost on the floor and a sink full of dirty crockery and cooking equipment."

In mitigation it was said for Wang that there had been a problem of supervision as he was not in the restaurant all the time.

It was added that the court proceedings had finally alerted him to the seriousness of the situation. Hygiene regulations had now been upgraded to a satisfactory level, with staff attending official hygiene courses.

Wang was fined £2,000 with £1,000 costs.
