Celebrity chefs thrash food critics at Taste of London challenge

A team of celebrity chefs beat some of the nation's best known food critics in an ingredient taste-challenge held in support of charity Action Against Hunger at Taste of London last night.

The celebrity chefs, who included Antonio Carluccio, Oliver Rowe and Anna Hansen, beat a team of critics, including Tom Parker Bowles and Tracy MacLeod, in a blind taste challenge, which tested their knowledge of ingredients.

Whilst the critics were unable to recognise some items such as flageolet beans and goat meat, the winning team successfully identified unusual items such as sea urchin, dragon fruit and roasted scorpions.

Compere Bill Knott, said: "Under the watchful eye of a live audience, the teams happily put themselves up for scrutiny and, in the case of sampling a roasted scorpion from Thailand, some less than pleasant taste sensations!

"Their willing participation has been invaluable in helping raise awareness of Action Against Hunger and the vital funds it generates to fight hunger and malnutrition worldwide."

The taste challenge took place in the Live Demonstration Theatre at Taste of London in Regent's Park.

Meanwhile a bomb scare yesterday evening meant that the entire Taste of London had to be evacuated for two hours while police scoured the property.

The Taste of London festival runs until Sunday 21st June.
