
The number of meals served by UK contract caterers grew by 1.2% to 1.6 billion in 2008, according to the latest survey by the British Hospitality Association.
Although the rise is smaller than the 3.8% growth reported for 2007, the total number of meals served by food service management companies has grown by 147% since 1991. During the same period, the number of outlets has increased by 42%.
The business and industry sector retains the lion’s share of the market, accounting for 44% of all meals served.
Healthcare and state education dished up 463 million meals in 2008, compared with just 44 million in 1989.
