Barcelo Hotels invests £500,000 in training to retain young talent

Barceló Hotels UK is investing £500,000 in a scheme to train and attract young people to enter a career in hospitality.

The Barceló Apprentice Chef Academy (BACA), launched in support of the Government's Skills Pledge, will train 20 young people a year and will focus on school leavers who want to pursue a career as a chef.

The initiative was launched at the Barceló Brighton Old Ship hotel by Simon Pedro Barceló, co-president of Barceló Hotels & Resorts, and special guests included Margaret Hodge, minister for culture and tourism.

"A skilled professional workforce is vital for providing a first class service and means more successful and more profitable businesses. Projects like BACA will help to create opportunities for young people in the hospitality industry," said Hodge.

The BACA programme will be run in association with VT Training to help apprentices gain an NVQ Level 2 qualification in food production with the option of commencing on to Level 3 qualification.

Apprentices will also have the opportunity to attend food awareness visits to Smithfield meat market, New Covent Garden, Grimsby Fish Market and supplier workshops.
