Hunt begins for Spanish Young Chef of the Year

Entrants are being sought for the Spanish Young Chef of the Year competition, which offers young chefs the chance to win a stage at Ferran Adrià's three-Michelin-starred restaurant El Bulli.

Organised by Spanish Foods, the competition is open to students and working chefs up to the age of 25 and aims to promote the use of Spanish produce in the UK catering industry.

Entrants are expected to create a three-course meal using a range of Spanish ingredients including strawberries or raspberries, Picota cherries or persimmon, and chorizo or Serrano ham, and are encouraged to also make use of other produce from Spain.

Last year's Spanish Young Chef winner was David Alun Powell from London's Westminster Kingsway College. He won a month's work experience with Jason Atherton at the Michelin-starred Maze in London as well as a 10-day training course at El Bulli in December.

The deadline for entrants to this year's competition is 27 November, with a final cook-off between eight finalists taking place in London on 16 January 2010.
