Sustainable Restaurant Association to launch next January
A number of leading restaurants including Quo Vadis, Carluccio's and Leon are expected to join the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) when it launches early next year.
The SRA is a not-for-profit, nationwide, membership-based organisation committed to promoting sustainability across the UK's restaurant industry, from high street chains to fine dining operators.
The Association, which has received National Lottery funding, is backed by Giles Gibbons, the founder of consultancy Good Business, and Mark Sainsbury, founder of Moro and The Zetter
It has revealed that a number of restaurants have expressed an interest in joining, including Quo Vadis, Wahaca, Carluccios, Paternoster Chop House, Alimentum and Leon.
Ahead of its launch, the SRA commissioned a survey on public attitudes towards sustainability in the restaurant sector, questioning nearly 1,100 consumers.
In response to the question "Do you think the restaurant industry is doing enough to tackle social and environmental issues?" two thirds of customers answered ‘no'.
When asked how much more likely they would be to eat at a restaurant with an overall award for its social and environmental performance, more than 70% said they would be more or much more likely.
"This survey shows that they can't ignore these demands if they want to satisfy existing customers and win new business. The Sustainable Restaurant Association has been set up to help them understand what they can do, and gain credit for the efforts they make."
