Chef from Simpsons in Birmingham wins BCF young chef title
Helen Evans from the Michelin-starred Simpsons restaurant in Birmingham has been named the British Culinary Federation (BCF) Young Chef of the Year 2009.
The 22-year-old beat 15 other chefs, aged 23 or under, from across the hospitality industry to the title of the national competition.
The final, which took place at Birmingham's University College on Monday (16 November), saw the chefs create a three-course meal for two incorporating a fish starter using bream, a main course using British pork, and a dessert using pears and chocolate.
Evan's winning menu comprised sea bream with potato scales, spinach and caviar sauce; followed by pork cutlet, black pudding, mustard oils with pomme puree, apple and confit of cabbage with marjoram and caper sauce; and pear, chocolate and chestnut mille fieulle.
She beat fellow Birmingham chef Aaron Darnley of Edmund's restaurant and Matthew Willdig of Moat House in Acton Trussell, Staffordshire, to second and third place respectively.
As the winner Evans received the David Bache trophy, along with £250 and a trip to Luxembourg. Previous winners have included Marcus Eaves of the Michelin-starred L'Autre Pied in London and Sue Ellis from Belle House in Pershore, Worcestershire.
