Wetherspoon relaunches controversial ‘January sale'
JD Wetherspoon
Starting from today and running until January 18, Greene King Ruddles, a 125ml glass of Fetzer wine, a measure of Gordon's gin with a mixer and a bottle of Carlsberg Export will all be sold for 99p.
The group is also offering two meal deals, selling ham, free-range eggs and chips and spicy tomato pasta at £1.99.
Martin Geoghegan, operations director at Wetherspoon, said: "Department stores and shops hold their sales in January, so we thought it would be a good idea to have a sale in our pubs too."
Wetherspoon faced heavy criticism from health campaigners when it launched its January sale last year, with accusations that it was promoting binge drinking.
Greene King was also upset that the company included its flagship ale IPA in the sale, warning that the move would devalue the IPA brand. Wetherspoon subsequently dropped IPA from the promotion and replaced it with Ruddles.
