Coal Grill and Bar plans three new restaurants

Mid-market casual dining chain Coal Grill and Bar opening three more restaurants, taking its total estate to seven.

Charterhouse Leisure, which owns the Coal Grill and Bar concept, has taken on the site of Exeter restaurant Exeshed, and its sister restaurant Severnshed in Bristol, which is located in a former boathouse designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, on the bank of the city's floating harbour.

The company has also bought a venue in Guildford High Street from one of the major national restaurant chains, although the company was unable to reveal the seller's identity.

Charterhouse Leisure chief executive John Gater, who previously founded the Ma Potter's chain, said: "The formula we've got seems to have just hit the sweet spot. We are in the mid-market casual dining sector and a lot of brands have been around for a while. I think because we are slightly the kids on the block and we offer a slightly more diverse menu. It seems to be going down well.
