Swansea's Penthouse restaurant to be remarketed as bankrupt owner faces legal action

The Penthouse restaurant atop Swansea's Meridian Tower has closed while its bankrupt owner is being taken to court by his wine suppliers over alleged unpaid bills.

The restaurant, which is located on the 29th floor of the £70m 300ft tower overlooking Swansea, Bristol Channel and Brecon Beacons, opened last December.

The Penthouse has now been reoccupied by its developers, Earthquake UK, who said it would be remarketed with a view to relaunching in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Peter Way Restaurants, the former operator of the Penthouse restaurant, is heading for London's High Court over thousands of pounds in unpaid wine bills.

The company, whose director Peter Way was declared bankrupt last month, allegedly owes wine merchant Barwell & Jones more than £25,000. Barwell & Jones said it has not been paid for goods delivered from 1 January this year, and is owed £25,475.86 plus interest.

Creditors of Way issued a petition in January seeking payment of more than £905,000 and the dispute involved a director's loan paid to him by cleaning company Aquila Support Services, which went into liquidation in June 2009.
