Adnams gets the green light to start distilling spirits
Brewer Adnams is to start producing spirits including gin and vodka, after it got the go-ahead to distil and store alcohol at its Sole Bay Brewery in Southwold.
The company has submitted a planning application for the installation of a micro distillery and refurbishment of the old brewery Copper House after it was granted a licence by HM Customs and Excise.
Chairman Jonathan Adnams said: "Following the example of the USA, there is currently a resurgence of consumer interest in high-quality handcrafted spirits and this is a fantastic opportunity for us. We are looking forward to Adnams Gin and Vodka on the shelves of our Cellar & Kitchen stores by the middle of November, but it will be a further three years before we see the emergence of the first Adnams Whisky following a three-year maturation in oak casks."
The spirits are set to be made from locally-grown malted barley.
Adnams will installing handmade copper distilling equipment made by Carl of Germany, and there are plans for visitors to the distillery to view the apparatus through a glazed front.
