Hung Parliament could benefit hospitality, says BHA boss
A hung Parliament could actually benefit hospitality businesses fed up with Government-imposed red tape.
That's the view of outgoing British Hospitality Association chief executive Bob Cotton, who called for certainty over future policy, whoever ends up in power.
Cotton was speaking as the horse trading between parties begins, as they bid to establish a workable Government.
"What business will actually want is certainty of policy over the immediate future. They will want a clear steer on tax and expenditure, whether we have a Tory minority Government or a Tory coalition or Lib Dem/Labour coalition," he said.
"If you get that I think business will calm down and the upside of a hung Parliament] might be that there will be far less micro management and new regulations coming through which have an impact on business because there won't be anyone with a clear majority to push that through," he added.
He also offered his support to the Tories to take a first shot at forming a new Government. "There is broad business support for the Conservatives. I would absolutely back Cameron to be given the first opportunity to form a Government but the Conservatives have got to recognise that they haven't achieved an outright majority. Everyone has got to accept the reality," he said.
