London hotel development remains in pole position ahead of 2012 Olympics

London's hotel development ahead of the 2012 Olympics continues apace with a larger pipeline than any of its European rivals, according to STR Global.

According to newly published data, within Europe, which has 699 hotels or 120,266 rooms in development, the UK leads the field with the equivalent of 27,384 rooms in progress.

The next largest development pipeline is in Germany, which has 16,702 rooms in progress.

By European City London also leads the way with 8,394 rooms in the active pipeline and with 3,682 of these actually under construction.

Berlin takes second place with 4,622 rooms in progress and 2,408 at the construction phase.

Within Europe the upscale (luxury) segment of the hotel market accounts for the largest proportion of the development pipeline, contributing around a quarter (24.4%) or 29,342 rooms of the grand total.

In a separate report last week PricewaterhouseCoopers warned that a glut of hotel openings ahead of the London Olympics could hold back the capital's, at present, stellar recovery.
