L'Enclume wins five AA rosettes as Restaurant Gordon Ramsay slips to four

L'Enclume in Cumbria has joined an elite band of restaurants by being the only new recipient of five AA rosettes.

Meanwhile Restaurant Gordon Ramsay was the only establishment to be demoted from five to four rosettes.

The award - the AA's highest culinary accolade - was announced at the AA Hospitality Awards 2010, at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Chef-patron of L'Enclume, Simon Rogan (pictured), was presented with the award for offering "groundbreaking cuisine that is inventive and innovative".

Rogan was praised for creating an unforgettable dining experience which provides a touch of humour and element of surprise, as well as for "stretching boundaries by looking at unusual flavour combinations and championing local suppliers and producers to bring the highest quality ingredients to the table".

Speaking after the presentation, Rogan said he wanted to thank the AA for the award and is now looking forward to improving further still. "It's testament to the investment in infrastructure that we have made in the past year and all the hard work that's been put in by the staff over the years," he said.

The other existing five rosette establishments include Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley, Sketch and Tom Aitkens - all in London, as well as Restaurant Sat Bains, Nottingham, the Fat Duck, Bray, Berkshire, and Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, Great Milton, Oxfordshire.

Regarding the demotion of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Simon Numphud, head of AA Hotel Services said that inspectors had visited the restaurant on numerous occasions over the past 18 months, together with members of the Hospitality Awards Panel.

"Restaurant Gordon Ramsay is still an outstanding restaurant," he explained. "However, following our inspections it was felt that the food no longer merited our highest award of five AA Rosettes. We have therefore taken the difficult decision to alter our AA Rosette rating for this establishment to four Rosettes."
