Alan Murchison seeks new name for Dartmouth's New Angel

The 10 in 8 Fine Dining Group is looking for a new name for the New Angel restaurant in Dartmouth, Devon, which it plans to relaunch in January.

Headed by chef Alan Murchison, the group is calling on the local community to come up with a new name for the iconic restaurant, which it acquired from former owner Clive Jacobs last month.

"We initially wanted to rename it the Carved Angel, the original name it held when it was first operated by Joyce Molyneux in the 1970s and 1980s. But unfortunately there's a trademark issue, as the owner prior to John Burton Race sold the restaurant without the name, which he is using for another food-related business," Murchison told Caterersearch.

"It's a shame but there's nothing we can do and so we thought: who better to get to help us rename it than the locals. We really want to be part of the community and this is a great way to get them involved."

Locals are being asked to submit their name suggestion to the New Angel by 5 December, with the new name set to be announced in January.

"We will close the restaurant for a week or two in January to upgrade it and will then reopen it with the new name," added Murchison.

The 10 in 8 Fine Dining Group now owns four restaurants including Michelin-starred L'Ortolan in Shinfield, Berkshire, and La Bécasse in Ludlow, Shropshire, as well as Paris House in Woburn, Bedfordshire.

The New Angel was famously closed by Burton Race's ex-wife, Kim, while he was appearing on ITV's I‘m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! in November 2007. It later collapsed into administration and was bought by Jacobs, who previously backed Burton Race when he was at the former two-Michelin-starred L'Ortolan in Berkshire. Earlier this year, Burton Race announced his departure from his role of executive head chef at the New Angel to focus on consultancy projects and his TV career.
