D&D London to launch outdoor cafe at the Royal Exchange

Restaurant group D&D London is to expand its offering at the Royal Exchange shopping centre in the City of London, with the launch of an outdoor café next summer.

The company, which already runs Restaurant Sauterelle and the Royal Exchange Grand Café at the Grade I-listed building, has signed a deal with property owner Fenlay for the site. The café will seat around 100 diners and also offer a takeaway service, with interiors to be developed by Conran & Partners.

D&D London chairman and CEO Des Gunewardena commented: "A snowy December may seem a strange time to be thinking about pavement cafés. But we are very excited about this project.

"We are planning to create something different but complimentary to the Royal Exchange Grand Café, which has been a big success for us."

Last week, D&D London announced it is to expand outside the capital with the launch of two restaurants at the Trinity Leeds shopping and leisure development in the heart of Leeds.

D&D London, which was formerly called Conran Restaurants and is still 51% owned by Sir Terence Conran, currently operates 30 restaurants in London, Paris, Copenhagen, New York and Tokyo.

The company plans to open its first hotel at South Place in the City of London in summer 2012, which will include 80 bedrooms, meeting and private dining facilities and a rooftop restaurant.
