Hotel linked to poet Shelley in administration

The Shelleys, a country house hotel and restaurant in Lewes, East Sussex linked with the family of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, IS still trading despite entering administration.

Jason Baker and Chris Stevens, partners at insolvency specialists FRP Advisory, were appointed joint administrators of the property on Lewes high street, on 17 December 2010.

The Shelleys, a 16th Century, grade II listed property with 4 stars from the AA and one AA rosette for its restaurant, was placed into administration following a downturn in trade. The administrators said the business was also affected by the relocation of some key corporate clients that no longer require accommodation in the area.

The Joint Administrators are continuing to operate the hotel and restaurant as normal, and are conducting an extensive marketing campaign for the sale of the business.

Commenting on the case, Baker said: "Trading is on-going and the hotel and restaurant are continuing to welcome guests as usual. Meanwhile, a purchaser is being sought for the business."

The East Sussex property, once a manor house owned by Shelley's family, was sold twice in 2007, the second time off a guide price of £2.5m to current owners Carlo Fernando and John Rudich Fernando. It provides 19 luxury rooms sleeping 37 guests, along with a 30-seat dining room, 20-seat hotel bar, a small meeting room, and a 40-seat conference room. It also has a large English garden with bench seating for 60 guests and parking for 25 cars.
