Charles Wells appoints operations director

Brewer and pub operator Charles Wells has promoted Craig Mayes to the newly created board position of operations director.

The 30-year-old took up his position on 1 January after previously serving as director of operations, head of operations of John Bull Pub Company in France and retail development manager at Charles Wells.

Previous experience includes a stint as operations and sales manager at Scottish & Newcastle.

Mayes, who has specific responsibility for the ongoing development of the company's relationship with its licensees, is managing a team of four retail development managers and the new post of retail development executive.

He is also overseeing the company's capital investment programme through its property development team.

Anthony Wallis, managing director of Charles Wells Pub Company, said: "Without our fantastic licensees we wouldn't have a business, so developing a close working relationship and appropriate support package with them through our operations team is critical.

"The appointment of an operations director to the board reflects the importance we place on this partnership and Craig has already demonstrated great leadership and the ability to implement change that is needed to develop our customer relations further."

Mayes added: "My immediate priorities are to improve the overall sustainability of our pubs, listen to customer feedback, to act on that feedback, continue to develop our relationships with licensees and to encourage them to engage in their local communities."

"I'll be working with the Charles Wells team to develop new and innovative ways to help licensees attract consumers into their pubs, despite the backdrop of austerity measures and pressure on leisure time and spend."

The appointment comes as Charles Wells is finalising a package of support to help those licensees whose business was adversely affected by December's poor weather.
