Sainsbury's to open devoted store for food on-the-go

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's is set to open what is thought be its first standalone outlet for hot and cold food to go, in the centre of London.

The new site at 76 Fleet Street, which is just around the corner from the company's headquarters in Holborn, will open its doors for the first time tomorrow at 7am.

It sits in close proximity to a number of other more established fast food and casual dining outlets, including Pret A Manger, Chilango and McDonalds, and has been kept under wraps with all its signage still covered up.

A local businessman said: "It looks like Sainsbury's is having a go at creating a business purely devoted to food but we don't know much more than the fact that it has appeared on the road. There are a number of well-known operators in an area that does a roaring breakfast and lunch trade so it will be interesting to see how they perform."

It was unclear whether the company plans to roll out more stores of this kind, although its presence so close to the company's headquarters suggests that the progress of the new venture will be monitored with interest.

The company, which today announced its ‘best ever' Christmas trading in an update to the City, was not immediately available for comment.
