UK chefs to run charity event for Christchurch Red Cross in wake of earthquake

A group of UK chefs have joined together to organise a charity dinner in aid of the Red Cross in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Kai We Care (kai is Maori for food) was the brainchild of Mat Follas, 2009 MasterChef winner and chef-proprietor of the Wild Garlic in Beaminster, Dorset, and food writer-turned-professional chef Dave Ahern.

The event, which will take place on 4 April in London, has captured the imagine of the Twitter community, It had originally been suggested that it would run as a pop-up restaurant for 30 people, but has now grown to a dinner for 200-plus guests cooked by Michelin-starred chefs, BBC MasterChef winners and multiple-AA rosette holders.

The ticket price has provisionally been set at £150 per person for a 12-course dinner.

The organisers of the event are hoping that the New Zealand High Commissioner or a representative will open the event.

Follas said: "I wanted to support my native land of New Zealand in its recent tragedy of the earthquake in Christchurch. It was a chance meeting and conversation with Dave Ahern and the power of social media has transformed this from a small fundraiser to the potentially huge donation we will be able to make."

Ahern added: "From an acorn grows the oak tree. And that is pretty much how this evolved on Twitter, a little more than a week ago. I am delighted to be able to give Mat a hand with his fundraiser. The outstanding support of all the chefs who have got involved is humbling and reaffirms my belief in the support we all feel as human beings when other people face tragedy. This London event is huge. Mark my words!"

The organisers would like to hear from any ex-pat New Zealanders who are able to assist in any way. To donate auction or raffle prizes, e-mail kaiwecare@gmail.com. You can follow Kai We Care on Twitter .
