Sir David Michels to become new Institute of Hospitality president
Sir David Michels has become the new president of the Institute of Hospitality.
The former Hilton Group chief executive and current deupty chairman of Easyjet will take on the role in February 2012, taking over from Peter Lederer, the chairman of Gleneagles hotel.
Lederer became the first ever president of the Institute of Hospitality in 2007, following the organisation's rebranding from the Hotel and Catering International Membership Association (HCIMA).
Sir David's appointment was announced today at the Institute's annual lunch, held at the Dorchester hotel in London, the same venue at which the very first luncheon of the then Hotel and Catering Institute (HCI) was hosted 60 years ago, in February 1951.
Together with his new Institute of Hospitality presidency, Sir David, 63, has a number of other affiliations in the hotel and catering industry. He is a board member of Strategic Hotels and Resorts and of Jumeirah Hotels, chairman of London & Capital and deputy chairman of Marks and Spencer.
In 2006, he was honoured with a knighthood for his services to the hotel and catering industry. He has held directorships at Arcadia, British Land, Paramount Restaurants and RAB Capital and he was group chief executive of Hilton International, before selling it to HHC in 2007 for £4b.
Prior to Hilton, Sir David was chief executive of Stakis, which he joined in 1990 and sold to Ladbrokes PLC nine years later for £1.2b. He also spent 17 years working internationally in various positions with Grand Metropolitan.
The Institute of Hospitality chief executive Philippe Rossiter said: "We're privileged that Sir David has agreed to be the Institute's new president. He brings a wealth of expertise and considerable experience, qualities which will prove to be invaluable at a key stage in the Institute's history."
