Sunday Mirror launches pub campaign with Camra and Al Murray
The Sunday Mirror has launched a campaign supported by Al Murray, the comedy pub landlord, which urges the public to get behind their local pub.
The newspaper said the campaign, backed by Camra, has been prompted by "greedy pub chains and cut-price supermarket alcohol" as well as "punitive taxes".
The paper said it was calling on Prime Minister David Cameron to honour his election promise that his Government would be "pub friendly" and take action to protect pubs, now closing at a rate of six a day.
Al Murray said: "The pub truly is the cradle of civilisation, where all freeborn British folk are equal, where kings and queens, princes and paupers, philosophers and footballers, astronauts and dustmen can stand shoulder to shoulder at the bar."
"I'm not asking much, just this - pop into your local this evening, pull up a bar stool and together we can turn this whole sorry business around."
The Sunday Mirror has printed 5,000 Support Your Pub campaign stickers which are being distributed to pubs by Camra members.
Camra's Mike Benner said: ‘We are delighted the Sunday Mirror has shown such concern at the alarming rate of pubs closing across Britain at present, and are pleased to be supporting such a high-profile and effective campaign. "Such support is exactly what struggling licensees need at the moment, and we hope the campaign convinces Government that pubs need urgent support as pub closures have a disastrous effect on communities.
