Three pubs fined almost £2,500 for not having a TV licence
Three pubs have been fined a total of £2,480 in the past week for not having a TV licence.
The owner of the Insole Arms in Cardiff was given the maximum fine of £1,000 while the publicans at the Royal Oak in Llanelli and the Oak Inn in Walsall were fined £600 and £550 respectively for the offence of using a TV without a licence on the premises. They were also ordered to pay £150 costs and a £15 victim surcharge each, at the hearings this week.
TV Licensing warned that any pub or bar which shows live television must be covered by a valid TV licence. If there is living accommodation on the premises where a TV is also in use, this must be covered by a separate licence.
Jon Shaw, TV Licensing spokesman, said: "We appreciate these are tough times for pubs, but to be fair to the majority who do pay the licence fee, we have to take action against those who watch TV illegally."
