Young chefs to compete for Visionary Dining title in support of Hospitality Action

Eleven young chefs are set to compete for a trip to an international restaurant of their choice at a dinner in aid of industry charity Hospitality Action this October.

The Visionary Dining Chef of the Year competition, which is to take place at Lakes Hotel School at Kendal College on 20 October, will see the 11 hopefuls cook a £125-a-head tasting menu, each under the tutelage of an established chef.

The mentors include industry heavyweights such as the Michelin-starred Simon Rogan, chef-patron at L'Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria, and André Garrett, head chef at Galvin at Windows in London, and Michael Wignall, head chef at the Latymer at Pennyhill Park in Surrey.

The winner, who will be chosen by the diners and a panel of four judges - including former AA chief inspector Peter Birnie and Le Gavroche senior sous chef Monica Galetti - will be awarded the title of Visionary Dining Chef of the Year and will receive a prize of a meal at a restaurant of their choice, including flights.

The competition, which will see young chefs cook for a total of 150 diners, has been organised by consultancy company Visionary Dining.

Managing director Gordon Cartwright said: "Our Chef of the Year will be someone who shows a natural culinary vision. We are looking for the use of clear, natural and vibrant flavours, flawless textures and high levels of intuitive skill. The winning dish will provide an ultimately memorable ‘wow' factor."
