Celtic Manor announces £160m expansion plans

Plans have been announced for a £160m expansion of the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, the venue of the 2010 Ryder Cup golf tournament.

The 409-bedroom resort, owned by billionaire Sir Terry Matthews, will add 40 apartments and 50 luxury lodges over the next 10 years.

There are also plans to open Skywire Wales - Europe's longest zipwire at a mile long and with speeds of up to 70mph - in August, alongside new leisure attractions such as laser combat, paintballing and archery. Last year, the resort invested £500,000 in developing new family activities, including a treetop high ropes course and an adventure golf course.

Paul Williams, Celtic Manor's public relations manager at Celtic Manor said: "The luxury lodges will be aimed primarily at the family leisure market, but when there is availability and the hotel is full with conference business, they will give the resort additional room capacity on site."
