North-east chef of the year competition launched

Friday 21 April 2006 16:42

Chefs in the North-east now have the opportunity to compete in a new culinary award in the region.

Terry Laybourne, new patron of the North-east culinary trade association (NECTA), has launched the search for North-east England chef of the year.

The two day event in May is open to members of the public as well as industry professionals and offers young student chefs an opportunity to present their skills and talents in a professional environment.

Laybourne has had a long career in the kitchens of the North-east, earning the region’s first Michelin star when he led the kitchen at 21 Queen Street.

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the region to demonstrate its passion for food and to promote culinary excellence for the future success of the industry”.
