The York region beat off competition from Sheffield, Doncaster, Leeds and Rotherham to scoop five awards at the recent White Rose tourism awards in Yorkshire.

The White Rose Awards, which were held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, were hosted by guest presenters including Christa Ackroyd (BBC presenter), The Lord Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu, Jo Willoughby (World Champion Sitskier), and David Lonsdale (Heartbeat actor).

York won awards in five of the categories, including Guest Accommodation of the Year, which went to Cundall Lodge Farm in Cundall, York. Ye Old Sun Inn in Colton in Tadcaster won the Yorkshire Pub of the Year award, with Scarborough’s Crown Spa Hotel winning the Sustainable Tourism Award.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “The standard of entrants at this year’s awards has surpassed our expectations and I know the judges have had a really tough job.  With the current economic climate, prestigious award ceremonies such as this are all the more important – Yorkshire tourism deserves its moment to congratulate the best of its colleagues and peers and as a region we certainly have a lot to be proud of.”

The Yorkshire Life Food and Wine Awards also took place this week, with food critic Jay Rayner presenting the winners with their accolades.
